Moon Over Cabo San Lucas

This photo really doesn't convey the mood of the moment. Maybe I can put it adequately on canvas.  The night was warm, wind stirred the palms, and the waves below crashed.  However, this is a shot of the pool, which was serenely blue. 

The most striking element was the clarity and sharpness of the dancing, reflected moonlight, while the moon itself was slightly veiled by thin clouds.

Lesson learned: put the coffee further away than the paint water cup! 

I keep wanting to dip my brush in java. 

This is for my colleague, who wanted a fall path pic since the beginning of the year.  Just now getting to it!  I'll add some low-lights when daylight comes.  Colors aren't true until the sun comes up.  I think the yellow may be too sunny.

I am finishing these in the wake of a visit to MFAH, which had an exhibit featuring the watercolors of John Singer Sargent. His work is so joyful that I wanted to emulate the feeling.  I noticed that his watercolors are very sketchy and look a little unfinished around the edges.  I often get carried away trying to complete every frond and leaf.

These acrylics are a mix of Blick  studio acrylics, Liquitex basics, Winsor and Newton Galeria paints--mostly the greens.   

Swamps

I'm learning to paint Louisiana.  It's trickier than you might think.

My friend Blair wanted something in her office that reminder her of happy childhood memories.  That meant scenes like those above!  I really wanted to add an alligator, but it didn't seem to fit.

My friend Katherine has asked me to paint some swamp pictures for her wall at work. This will be her"Serenity Now" space. So I'm having to learn the look of a soothing swamp! Here are the results so far:

Odd Trees

Some of the trees here are different because of the climate, such as these pines:

Others, like the kapok, used in Indonesia to make everything from furniture to insulation, are exotics.

The strangler fig is also a distinct tree that reminds me of jungles, ruins, and the futility of trying to slow nature down.
